Brick Pavers for Cottage , Country, or Old World Backsplash

I found exactly what I was looking for when I revised my beadboard backsplash idea. It's really inexpensive, has lots of character and "old house" appeal, and will be easier to install than tile. What is this miracle material, you might ask? Simple brick pavers. I went to Lowe's the other to see if I could find some that are thin enough to use a backsplash. I checked out the Outdoor/Lawn and Garden area, but nope...not there. The Lowe's associate told me they didn't carry them. Not deterred, I headed inside to the tile department and lo and behold, they had them! Just .52 each, too!

I brought home a few pavers to play around with...I painted one a bisque color that will coordinate nicely with our appliances. Since our cabinets are going to be red (paint swatch in photo below - I decided against Russett as people commnented that it looked "pinkish/fuscia" and instead went with a shade by Waverly called "Cherry") , I thought the backsplash needed to be nice and bright. I next painted a brick the same color as the cabinets. I tried to white wash it but the result was very pink. What worked really well was to just apply a white glaze and then wipe it off, which left glaze down in the pits and crevices...a very nice look. So I know for sure that I'll use bisque paint for most, if not all, the pavers - but I may decide to throw a few of the red ones in there for a little more punch. I'll just have to see.

Very cool, Kim. I love your decorating style! Can't wait to see the finished result!

Nice look. Will you be putting a sealer on them? That might change the color too, like glazing on pottery.

Thanks Ben and (Anonymous!) Yes, I'm planning on sealing it...it will be interesting to see how it changes the look and color:)

Those will look great! And so inexpensive too! Good stuff. :)

Great Kim! Its always satisfying to find something that will work just right! I personally LOVE the cherry color! I’m a stickler for reds =) I really look forward to seeing how it comes out!

Thanks! I hope it works out ok! It will be a little while before we install it because hubs has to first do some hardwiring for the undercabinet lights. Can't wait to get it up!

Pavers! Great idea. I might do that myself somewhere.

Hey Kim, love the pavers! I met with a customer today at her home and guess what she had painted cabinets - RED!! They looked beautiful, she had what I thought was a slate backsplash, she explained that it was really peel and stick tiles that looked like slate!! Can't wait to see pictures. K.

This is the best idea I've seen all month! How will you apply them to the wall--construction adhesive like Liquid Nails?

At 10:35 PM, Kim said...

Kelli, that's great to hear about the red cabinets looking nice - I hope mine turn out ok! I've started some work and and they're looking great so far!

Hi, Meredith! I'm not sure yet how the pavers will need to be applied. Hmmm...I'll have to do some research, that's for sure! I'll be sure to post what I find out - good question!

You might want to consider Z-Brick http://www.z-brick.com/

I love your look! I've had z-brick on my kitchen back splash for years and it has me stopped like a clock. I have cherry cupboards and they go well with them but my counter top is white and I'm painting the kitchen a soft green and the red bricks look a little too hard. I love the glazing idea. Where did you purchase it and who makes it? Great job!

Buena- I want to paint my kitchen green- have many samples of color on wall. What color are you using? I am having a tough time deciding on the green- I have a small kitchen and want a nice light green. Thanks!

Reconsidering the Beadboard Backsplash Idea

All this time, I *knew* that we would install a beadboard backsplash in the kitchen. I mean, what says cottage like beadboard? But as of late, I'm thinking I want something altogether different. We're going to be putting beadboard in our hallway and bathroom, so I don't mind not having it in the kitchen. I really love how the fireplace "aged" tile came out...the texture and feel it adds to the room is amazing. I've decided that I want the same kind of look and texture for the kitchen backsplash. I don't want to use the same technique (there was lots of grout and limestone wash involved...I'm afraid that I might over time scrub it off if it were a backsplash - even with a sealer). So now I'm trying to come up with something different that might give me a similar look. I'm even thinking about looking for old looking cobblestone, painted/whitewashed brick (like the photo on left) or another natural element like tumbled travertine. My cabinets are going to be red...so an offwhite backsplash would look nice, I think.

Just a sidenote, like Greg over at the Petch House, hubs is going to hardwire some undercabinet lighting. We really need the extra light and I hate seeing cords. It should make a big difference.

Today, I'm pulling out my handy dandy electric screwdriver hubs bought for me a few months back to take down our kitchen cabinet doors. It's time to for the cabinet makeover to begin:)

Hey Kim! You can find a lot of the plantation homes over here with white painted/whitewashed brick, which really does give it a unique aged look.
I know there is so much thought that goes into each room, and with every step we take, our ideas only begin to take shape.
Look forward to knowing what you go with!

We have a beadboard backsplash and I would definitely rather have tile or brick. I'll love to hear what you decide to do.

At 11:54 AM, Kim said...

Yeah, I need to some shopping around for just the right material. I am really heavily leaning to brick, if I can find some affordable thin brick, and then just painting them out.

Jordana, can you let me know what you don't particularly like about your beadboard backsplash? Is it difficult to clean? Thanks!

At 1:37 PM, Jessica said...

Hey Kim ~ just an idea....if you cant find thin brick and still want to go with brick, they do sell masonary saw blades for cutting brick and such. We bought one in case we needed to cut the brick for our stove floor. I dont know how hard it would be because we never had to use it, but it might cut some costs too. You would buy less that way!

Hey Kim,
Well I am so excited that you are starting the kitchen!!! It all begins with the first cabinet door coming down!! I love the tumbled stone or tumbled tile used on backsplashes. For the amount you would need I would check with your larger tile stores for limited quantity items, you can usually get these items at a highly reduced price. Let me know what you decide to do. Kelli

Thanks for tips and ideas, Jess and Kelli! I'm really excited about the kitchen...we've worked on the walls in the living room and kitchen for so long, it's nice to finally start on the other major elements!

I'll be posting more about what I found today that I'm going to use for the backsplash. I found just what I was looking for!

At 7:24 AM, bookyeti said...

Oh white-washed brick would look lovely! I'm not familiar at all with beadboard. I will have to look it up and see what it looks like.

At 9:51 AM, Jordana said...

Kim, yes, it is hard to clean. It catches stuff and doesn't let it go. It doesn't look awful from a distance, but I think other choices for a backsplash would be nicer. I can't wait to see what you found.

At 9:06 PM, jewlover2 said...

i like the whitewashed brick idea. i love painted brick and would have done it on my block foundation but it wasnt in my budget for the brick...especially just to paint it afterwards.

Great choice though. Very colonial but at the same time 'cottage-y' too.

Bev, beadboard is wainscotting. Here is an example of beadboard used on the ceiling and backsplash:)

Jordana, that's good to know. What I end up doing may also be hard to clean, lol, but we shall see:)

Ashlee, I love painted exterior brick, too! Alas, hubby doesn't, so we won't be painting our outside brick. *sniff* In the future, you guys can always go back and add brick (and then paint!) Can't wait to see your lovely new home!

Better Quality (I think) Photos of Painted Living Room

This entry is an addendum to the entry below. It was much sunnier today so I took a few more snapshots of the new living room wall color. I hope the color comes out a little better. I turned the lamp off in the last photo hoping that it would help.

Hey Kim! Your living room looks fantastic! I am already partial to the warm rich yellow family hehe, and your living room turned out soooo pretty! It’s so cheery! Your progress is coming along so well!

I love yellow but since I was going w/ ocean colors in the new place, it just didnt work out! No yellows in the oceans I've visited...LOL!

But the color is beatiful on your walls and does indeed make me want to dip a shrimp in there! Very aptly named.

The colors in my house read as follows: Deep Peacock, Milan Turquoise, Golden Amber, Sand Pebbles, Wave Blue, Sequoia, Pale Ginkgo,White Wheat, and Silk Blue. All by Porter Paints. So far they have all been very true to the swatch...Whew!

Thanks! The color is called "Clarifed Butter" by American Tradition. The chip number is 3001-6B. I chose an eggshell finish:)
